Craps: Place Number Bets
The descriptions, payoffs, and odds of place number bets in craps.
In craps the 4,5,6,8,9, and 10 are known as the "place numbers." Players may place bets on these numbers at any times, but they work just like placing an odds bet, but have a worse payoff (besides “hard way” bets). Any remaining place number bets on the table are lost when the point is rolled.
Hard ways: There are four different hard way bets. A hard way 10 bet is gambling that a pair of fives will be rolled before a 7 or another 10 (7 & 3). This is called "the hard way" because it is harder to roll two fives than a 7 and 3. Likewise, you can bet on a hard 4, 6, or 8. Each respective hard way bet is a bet that doubles will be rolled rather than a seven or that same number the “easy” way.
Hard 4 or 10 pays 7:1 with a house edge > 11%
Hard 6 or 8 pays 9:1 with a house edge > 9%
Big X bet: A bet that place number X will be rolled before a 7. This bet pays even money and the house edge is over 9%.
Buy bet: A buy bet is the same as a place bet, but instead of paying 1:1 odds, they pay actual odds. However, the player has to pay a 5% commission to place a buy bet. House edge on all buy bets is about 4.5%
Lay bet: The lay bet is the opposite of the buy bet. The lay bet is placed on the 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10. Lay bets gamble that a 7 will be rolled before the number you choose. Since a 7 is the most commonly rolled number, the player must wager more money than he can win. The player must pay a 5% commission on the possible winnings and the bet pays true odds. House edges range from 2-4%
Place bet: Similar to laying the odds, the player may bet on a 4,5,6,8,9, or 10. The player wins if the number he chose is rolled before a 7. Players may make place bets after the come out role. Payouts and house edges vary.
4 or 10 pays 9:5 with a house edge of 6.67%
5 or 9 pays 7:5 with a house edge of 4.00%
6 or 8 pays 7:6 with a house edge of only 1.52%
Place bets may be taken down at any time as long as a 7 has not been rolled.
